The chairman of the PSL expecting South African teams to conquer African football

The chairman of the PSL Dr. Irvin Khoza is very serious regarding South African teams to dominate the African continent when it comes to football as there is nothing holding the PSL teams not to do well. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are also expected to do it again, they are not expected to seat back and say they have already achieved in CAF football.

South African football has moved a step up due to the success that Mamelodi Sundowns had in the CAF Champions League. Sundowns won the CAF Champions League for the country and the national team is also benefiting from their success. The recent win in the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Senegal was the first step to indicate that our football can be better than other African countries only if we take the CAF competitions seriously.

All PSL teams should be encouraged by what Mamelodi Sundowns did. This is not only for their benefit but also to lift our football to world stages. If we can manage to have at least 3 or 4 teams doing well in CAF competitions then we would not be watching the AFCON 2017 without our national team taking part.

Orlando Pirates did extremely well when they reached the CAF Champions League final and the CAF Confederations final in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Even though they did not win in those 2 finals, their input was very influential for South African football. Pirates are the other PSL side apart from Sundowns that are always participating in CAF competitions.

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to be in the same standard as Sundowns and Pirates but lately they have been struggling to win local competitions and the league title which put them far away from taking part in the CAF competitions. They are currently trying to build a formidable team that will be able to compete with the best locally and continentally. With time Kaizer Chiefs will be able to represent South Africa in CAF competitions.

Bidvest Wits tried and are always eliminated before reaching the group stages but they have never been serious about CAF competitions as they always field their second team when playing in the CAF competitions. The time is now for Wits to start taking those competitions seriously for their own benefit and that of the country.

Supersport United also tried but failed the same way as Wits. The problem with Supersport is that they are always too focused on winning local competitions but when it comes to continental competitions they tend to put a foot backward. They blame fatigue and expenses for participating in CAF competition but now CAF has increased the price tag in both competitions. Supersport should also start taking the CAF competitions seriously.

If we can look at the countries that are very serious about CAF competitions we can see that their national teams are also benefiting. The likes of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are benefiting because teams like TP Mazembe and AS Vita are always doing well in CAF competitions.

Egyptian football is far ahead of ours because their teams are always doing well in CAF competitions. Al Ahly and Zamalek are the powerhouses of African football and they are always participating in the competitions which benefit their national team.

It is time that South African teams start doing well in CAF competitions and if not then we must stop dreaming about CHAN, AFCON, and the World Cup. It does not make sense for Bafana Bafana to dream of playing in the world cup while they are failing to qualify for AFCON.

SuperSport United are now in the finals of the CAF Confederations Cup against experienced TP Mazembe and they are expected to bring the trophy back home in South Africa. Kaizer Chiefs will be under a lot of pressure if SuperSport United wins the CAF Confederations Cup.
