Former Orlando Pirates midfielder’s return to the PSL from Europe

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder who played for Pirates in the last CAF Champions League final match against Al Ahly is back in the PSL after refusing to extend his contract with a team in Greece. he is currently playing for Platinum Stars and were recently knocked out of the Telkom Knockout Cup by Bloemfontein Celtic at home. Masalesa played for Bafana Bafana as a captain for the CHAN qualifiers where Bafana Bafana failed to qualify.

Masalesa captained Bafana Bafana in the Cosafa cup and was also looking forward to be part of the CHAN squad but was told he was not eligible because he was playing in Europe not Africa. Masalesa was looking forward to continue captaining the national team in the second major tournament after he enjoyed the armband in the Cosafa Cup.

The 24-year old former Orlando Pirates central midfielder is currently enjoying his move to Greece after a longtime on the sidelines after the arrival of Muhsin Ertugral at Orlando Pirates. ‘Viera’ has played less than five games for his new team in Greece but locals treat him like a king. Whenever they meet him they get excited and ask for photos and autographs.

His career nearly stalled here in South Africa as there were no other teams interested in his service after being ignored by the then new Pirates coach Muhsin Ertugral. In general we can say Muhsin nearly destroyed Vieira’s football career and up until today Masalesa still has a lot of questions about it.

Masalesa played in the highest stages of African football and was every impressive whenever on the field of play. He played in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup but surprisingly when Muhsin arrived he had his own plans and his bunch of new players who are currently struggling to make the grade at Pirates.

He is now looking forward to play well and make it to one of the UEFA cups as it is every player’s dream to play in two different continental competitions in football. Masalesa is very talented and will definitely help his team achieve each and every dream that has been there and never achieved before his arrival.

His move to Greece has made him believe that doors to new opportunities do not close forever. Now his focus is to play well and wait for the national team call-up as the opportunity is there and SAFA are still looking for a new coach to replace Shakes Mashaba who was given the boot last year in December.

He is playing for a team called Athlitiki Enosi Larissa which is in the Greece top flight.

This is what he said about his new team, “I hope if I play regularly at club level it will help my chances of playing for the national team because we all dream of playing for our country. I may have played for the junior national teams, but as a player you want to play for the senior team.”

His role models are Andile Jali and Thulani Serero. Masalesa has watched how the likes of Andile Jali and Thulani Serero have improved their game while playing in Europe and he’s encouraged by the impact these players usually make for Bafana Bafana.

Masalesa says he still has high hopes that he will one day return to the mighty Orlando Pirates as his exit from the team was due to a lot of reshuffling of coaches. He said Pirates is his home and will be back at home soon.
