Teko Modise is now playing his football at Cape Town City FC as the coach Benni McCarthy likes his style of play. He has played a number of games for the Cape Town team and so far did well. Teko is an experienced midfielder who played football at the highest level. Benni recently replaced Modise in a cup final and that was the worst mistake he has ever done as a new coach in the PSL as the team ended up losing the trophy after Teko was replaced. Let’s look at how Teko Modise joined Cape Town City.
Mamelodi Sundowns star midfielder Teko Modise’s contract came to an end at the end of June 2017. Sundowns were yet to say a word about the renewal of his contract and the fact that he was left out of the team that travelled to Tunisia for a CAF Champions’ League group stage match was an indication that he was on his way out of the Pretoria based team. Teko has played for a number of teams in the PSL and has had a lot of success as a footballer as he won a few ‘Player of the Year’ awards.
News coming within the Sundowns camp is that Teko Modise opted out of the travelling team by himself as he saw no reason for travelling while he was aware that he won’t be part of the team in future. The fact that Sundowns did not exercise a one year option on Teko’s contract fuelled his chances of looking for a new team as he felt not wanted anymore by Sundowns.
He asked the coach Pitso Mosimane not to include him for the trip to Tunisia. In the first match between the two sides where Esperance won the match, Teko was not part of the Sundowns team as he had flu. Teko and his agent Jazzman Mankhahlane were working 24 hours to sort the uncertainty.
Some of the reasons given for Teko not to travel to Tunisia where about the possibility of being injured and who was going to take the responsibility for his injury if he should get injured as his contract was coming to an end in a week and half’s time. He tried by all means not to get involved in any risky activities that could ruin his football career.
At age 34, Teko Modise is one of the most decorated footballers in the country as he has achieved a lot of things as a footballer where his career also includes international caps with Bafana Bafana where he scored a number of goals and also played in the world cup. Teko has indicated that he still has about 4 years remaining in him to play competitive football and being on the bench does not help his dream.
So far he has won about 6 trophies with the Sundowns team since joining them in 2011 from Orlando Pirates. Teko was only waiting for Sundowns to give him clear signs to join any team or to continue playing at the team as per rules. Sundowns were supposed to tell Teko whether they were renewing his contract or not so that he could start planning for his future in the beautiful game of football.
Orlando Pirates were said to be interested in bringing Teko Modise back to the team to offer balance in the midfield as Oupa left the team for Sundowns. Teko is now playing for cape Town City and looking to retire there as he says he does not like it to move from club to club all the time. He is looking to settle at Cape Town City and possibly be the next coach in the development ranks when he retires.
