PSL teams’ best and worst captains on and off the field

The PSL teams have different captains leading them on and off the field. The captain’s job does not end in the field of play as they still have to represent their teams outside of football. Their conduct away from the field of play is also important as they are role models to a lot of youngsters there who are looking at them to learn and live the way they do.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is one of the best leagues in the world and currently the best in Africa. All 16 PSL teams have their captains that were nominated within the structures of the teams. The captains are regarded as very important in motivating teammates and making sure everything is in order in the field of play. Below we will look at the best and worst team captains in the PSL.

Hlompho Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns is one of the best team leaders in the PSL and the African continent as a whole. He has captained the Sundowns team for a number of seasons and has managed to win silverware as captain including the recent CAF Champions League trophy where Sundowns went all the way to beat African giants like Zamalek and Al Ahly of Egypt.

Hlompho is also a Bafana Bafana player and at some points was given the captaincy of certain matches where the original captains were unavailable. With teammates like Percy Tau, Anthony Laffor, Khama Billiat and Sibusiso Vilakazi, it becomes very much lighter for Hlompho to lead the team as everybody is aware of their duties.

Thulani Hlatshwayo of Bidvest Wits has proven to be a natural leader. The lad has managed to lead his Bidvest Wits team to their first PSL title in their 90 years existence. He has managed to lift the trophy for the first time in front of few Wits supporters. Tyson as he is known is one of the best captains in the PSL and probably the best currently. The team will be looking to defend their title in the new season.

Hlatshwayo is also the national team Bafana Bafana captain and was the leader when Bafana Bafana managed to beat Nigeria for the first time in an official match. His leadership abilities are there for everyone to see and so far he has not disappointed and has been the pillar of strength in defense for both Wits and Bafana Bafana. Tyson is destined for greater heights and it won’t be surprising to see him play for teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs has not done anything surprising for his team as the captain except to stop goals from opponents. He was the Bafana Bafana captain and was kept out of the position when he was out injured by the late Senzo Meyiwa. Since then he has struggled to get his position back as Hlatshwayo is the real deal for the position at Bafana Bafana.

Oupa Manyisa of Orlando Pirates has disappointed the team’ supporters since he was given the captaincy of the team. His form dropped so much that he was regarded as an average player at Pirates and was late released for Mamelodi Sundowns where he is still struggling to reach his form.

By far Manyisa can be regarded as the worst Orlando Pirates captain ever as the team did not even qualify for the top 8 position meaning that they did not take part in the MTN Top 8 competition which is played by the top 8 teams in the league. Orlando Pirates have a new captain in Thabo Matlaba as their former captain is now playing for Mamelodi Sundowns. So far he has not disappointed.
