The PSL teams are now about to finish the first round of their 2017/18 season. The teams have managed to sign goalkeepers to make sure they have enough not to concede a lot of goals while challenging for the title. There are a lot of young talented goalkeepers in the PSL but most of them are warming benches in the teams they play for due to teams preferring experienced goalkeepers.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has 16 teams each and every season. Those teams have a lot of players including about 3 or 4 goalkeepers. The PSL has had a number of talented goalkeepers over the years and currently there are goalkeepers who are considered world class. The standard of goalkeepers in the PSL has grown so much that the teams are importing top goalkeeper coaches from top countries around the globe.
All 16 PSL teams have great goalkeepers but there are the best goalkeepers who are better than the rest. The talent spotted in goalkeepers includes the ability to stop clear scoring opportunities, stopping shots from all ranges and ball distribution to teammates to facilitate transitional play as fast as possible. Below we will discuss top talented goalkeepers in the PSL.
Itumeleng Khune is regarded as South Africa’s number one goalkeeper by a lot of football fans around the country. He has been the Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana’s number one goalkeeper for a lot of years. Itumeleng has played in the AFCON and FIFA World Cups for Bafana Bafana and has represented his country a lot of times except when he was injured. Khune has been the number 2 goalkeeper only once during his playing days and that is when Senzo Meyiwa was still alive. Senzo had taken the number one jersey from Khune and was also made the captain of the national team by the then coach Shakes Mashaba.
So far Khune has no competition in the national team as he is guaranteed the number one jersey whenever Bafana Bafana are playing. There is no doubt that Khune is South Africa’s number one as he has proved that to all of South Africans. He had stopped clear scoring opportunities from opponents and at times was called ‘Superman’ of Kaizer chiefs as he has been the live wire when the whole Chiefs team was nowhere to be found, but Khune managed to keep the team in most games by not conceding goals.
Dennis Onyango of Mamelodi Sundowns is one of the great goalkeepers in the PSL. He has won a number of trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns and is the current number one goalkeeper at Sundowns and Uganda where he is also the national team captain. Dennis was named CAF Player of the year last season and is still the reigning player of the year.
At Sundowns, Dennis has managed to keep top goalkeeper like the AFCON winner with Zambia, Kennedy Mwene. Kennedy is now seeking a move away from Sundowns so that he could get game time and get himself back to the Zambian national team as since he has not been playing at Sundowns they have not called him up on a number of occasions.
Dennis is currently Uganda’s number one goalkeeper and has played for his national team in all competitions including the AFCONs. He won the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns last season and the team is currently defending the title. Without any doubt Dennis has achieved a lot of accolades as a goalkeeper and a lot more are still coming as age is still on his side.
Orlando Pirates signed Wayne Sandilands from Mamelodi Sundowns but so far the shot stopper has not disappointed as he has conceded less goals than previous goalkeepers who conceded about 12 goals in two games last season. Wayne is an experienced goalkeeper who was in goals when Sundowns won the CAF Champions League after Onyango sustained a head injury.
