Orlando Pirates fans were not happy when their chairman announced Kjell Jonevret as their new coach last season after the resignation of Muhsin Ertugral. Some of the fans even said they won’t attend Pirates matches due to the chairman’s ignorance of not reappointing Ruud Krol as the team’s coach going forward. The new coach Micho is also struggling at Pirates as the team has scored less than 10 goals so far after playing close to 15 matches in the PSL.
The announcement of a new coach by Dr. Irvin Khoza back then was met with a few different reactions from the fans as some had their own coaches in mind to take over the coaching job left by Muhsin Ertugral at Pirates. The Swedish man signed a 3 year contract at Pirates and a lot wase expected from him by the Pirates management.
Kjell Jonevret has won the coach of the year award last season in Sweden and has proven to the Swedish football fans that he was one of the best coaches who helped with development of football in their country. It is now that he will be helping the development of football in South Africa. Not everyone is happy about him being a Pirates coach.
Some fans were hoping for Ruud Krol to return to the team as they felt he was the only one who was suitable and experienced enough with the Pirates culture. Ruud Krol was the favorite by no doubt from 70% of Pirates fans and if fans were the ones making final decisions today Dr. Irvin Khoza would have announced Ruud Krol as the Pirates coach for the next 3 years.
Some were asking for Benni McCarthy to be given a chance as he was a Pirates players before and has also acquired her coaching qualifications. Benni was one of the fans favorite and he was also ready to take charge of the team if given a chance and a lot of people were expecting his name to be announced as the man to take charge of the senior Pirates team.
There are other fans who were expecting for Dan Malesela to be announced as Pirates coach and by today morning a lot of people were believing that Dan Malesela was going to be announced as a Pirates coach until 11am where Dr. Irvin Khoza made an announcement that no one ever guessed. Malesela will remain at Chippa United and hope one day the fans’ wishes will be granted.
The Swedish man is facing a lot of work at Pirates and most importantly he has to make sure that unity is achieved in the team as currently there is no unity at all. The team is playing good football without any success and his first job is to make sure the team collects enough points to lead them to the top 8 position.
Pirates have played 8 games without a win and they will be hoping for change in their next fixture. The last match they played against Cape Town City FC was one of their best games as they managed to collect a point. No one was expecting Pirates to win the match especially at the time where the Cape Town City were at their best.
The buccaneers are currently on a lot of players under injury and mostly the key players. The recent departure of Edwin Gyimah has also left the team in a lot of pressure as the defense has been leaking for most of the defeats they suffered especially the 2 league games where they concede 12 goals.
The current team is struggling to score goals but have a number of strikers in their books.
