Another Chiefs goalkeeper threatening to leave the team due to Itumeleng Khune

Brilliant Khuzwayo is set for a move away from Kaizer Chiefs as he sees no reason to stay as his talent is not respected at Chiefs. The KZN born goalkeeper is about to leave Chiefs for another team in the January transfer window with the likes of Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City FC looking for his services. Brilliant has realised that it will difficult for him to play at Chiefs while Khune is still around.

Itumeleng Khune is currently the best goalkeeper in South Africa. He is also the first choice at Kaizer chiefs. His performances have kept a lot of goalkeepers on the bench for chiefs and Bafana Bafana. A few goalkeepers ended up leaving Kaizer chiefs because they were never offered an opportunity to play for the team because Khune has been doing well for the team. In the national team he was also unchallenged as most goalkeepers who were second choice to him ended up being frustrated. Let us look at other goalkeepers who went on to seek game time somewhere else because of Khune.

Goalkeepers who left Chiefs because of Khune

Thela Ngobeni

Thela has been with Kaizer Chiefs for a longtime and was never afforded time to play because Itumeleng Khune has been brilliant for Chiefs. He stayed on the sidelines for a long time until he asked to be released. He then joined Mamelodi Sundowns.

At Sundowns he was also not given a chance as Kennedy Mwene was doing well for the team. He then moved to Free State Stars and that is where his talent as a goalkeeper is being utilized.

Aubrey Mathibe

Aubrey was a Chiefs goalkeeper before joining Bidvest Wits and Moroka Swallows. He was an assistant to Itumeleng Khune for a long time until he asked to be released as he stood no chance of playing at Chiefs as Khune was brilliant from the first day he was given game time between the sticks.

He then went on to join Wits and later on went to Moroka Swallows where he was given enough game time to prove he was one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

Riyaad Pieterse

Riyaad was also promoted to the first team by Kaizer chiefs after impressing at the reserve side. He then went to the first team and stayed there for a long time being the assistant goalkeeper to Itumeleng Khune. He was only afforded game time when Khune was injured or suspended. In all the games he played for Chiefs he did well but was dropped as soon as Khune was available to play.

He is now at Supersport United and has taken over from Ronwan Williams as the first choice keeper for the side. Pieterse is now doing well and if he did not move away from chiefs he would still be on the sideline up to today because Khune is still continuing with his brilliant form at Chiefs.

Goalkeepers who were frustrated by Khune’s performances at Bafana Bafana

Moneeb Josephs

Moneeb was one of the best goalkeepers in the country. He was playing regularly for Orlando Pirates and was the first choice goalkeeper for the team when they won double treble. Moneeb was superb between the sticks and was a nightmare for a lot of strikers in the PSL. He was selected for Bafana Bafana for the world cup squad in 2010 and played in Bafana Bafana’s 2 – 1 win against France because Itumeleng Khune was suspended.

In most cases where he was selected for Bafana Bafana, he was not given a chance to play from the start and that frustrated him until such point where he refused when he was selected for the national team when Khune was injured. He indicated that he does not want to be an assistant to anyone as he was doing well for Pirates and should be afforded a first team selection.

The late Senzo Meyiwa

Senzo deputized Itumeleng Khune for a number of years and that rivalry has been going on from the junior ranks as Khune was the first choice. At Bafana Bafana, Khune as the first choice until such time when Shakes Mashaba was selected as the coach for the national team. That is when Senzo was given first preference ahead of Khune because of his brilliant form for Pirates in the PSL and the CAF Champions League.

Senzo Meyiwa was the only goalkeeper who managed to bench Khune in the national team and that record still stands now as he was also the captain of Bafana Bafana during his death 2 and half years ago. Currently Khune is back as Mzansi’s number one again.
