During the start of the season and the January transfer window period, a lot of teams signed players to make sure they had enough depth in their teams going forward. There those few teams who did not sign players because they felt they had enough players to help them throughout the 2016/2017 PSL season. Some players who were signed by their new teams are doing well while others are still yet to be given a chance in their new team. Let us look at the players who were signed just for the sake of having them.
Donald Makondelela (Orlando Pirates from Baroka FC)
Donald was playing very well for Baroka FC and he was one of the key players for the Limpopo based team. The team is now facing relegation from the PSL and if he was there things would have been better for them. He was never used at Orlando Pirates and was loaned out without any explanation as to why he was signed at the first place.
For him to get to the form that he was on before joining Pirates might take him a year or more. It is much better now that he has found a team to play for in the PSL.
Justice Chabalala (Orlando Pirates from Free State Stars)
The young central defender is now playing for Chippa United in the Eastern Cape and was looking forward to prove his worth at Orlando Pirates when he was signed while Muhsin was still a coach there. He was used a number of games and did very well and also scored a goal in Pirates colours.
Surprisingly he had to learn about a loan move in the media as Pirates officials concluded the deal with Chippa United without his knowledge. His agent was also in limbo about the loan deal but he ended up joining Chippa United for the current season. It is not clear whether he would return to Pirates at the end of the season or the loan deal could be extended.
James Okwuoso (Orlando Pirates from Chippa United)
The Nigerian defender was signed from Chippa due to the fact that Pirates management knew that Edwin Gyimah was on his way out. The deal between Okwuoso and Pirates has been going on for almost two seasons and all the times it did not materialize. He finally joined Pirates during the January transfer window and only played a game or two for the buccaneers.
With the new coach at Pirates playing a new formation and doing well, it might be very difficult for Okwuoso to break into the Pirates line-up. Happy Jele and Ayanda Gcaba are doing well in central midfield for Pirates and James could only be used when they are suspended or injured.
Siyabonga Nhlapo (Highlandspark from Bidvest Wits)
The right back has failed at Wits and his inclusion into the Highlandspark team was questionable for the fans’ point of view. He was once the best right back in the PSL and was also roped in to the Bafana Bafana team a few months ago but recently has not impressed in the position. The former Jomo Cosmos defender must pull up his socks if he is looking forward to play football in the PSL again.
