“I would definitely like to represent my country”

Xola Mlambo says he would love to get an opportunity to play for the national side, but he knows he has to work extra hard because of the competition there is for places in central midfield.

Despite being on top form for the first few weeks of the season, Mlambo was unable to make the cut in Bafana coach Stuart Baxter’s squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya last weekend. Bafana were held to a goalless draw by the Libyans at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“As a professional football, I would definitely like to represent my country and help them if I can. To be honest, I strongly doubt there is a player who wouldn’t wish to represent their country, so I would love to be given a chance but only God knows as to whether or not I am destined to represent the country,” Mlambo says.

“I think South Africa is blessed with midfielders. In that department it’s quite hectic. There’s players who are playing abroad and there are players who are playing locally. When they select the national team, it’s mostly made up of midfielders.

“We have a number of good midfielders, even those who are up-and-coming and they are highly talented. Whatever that you need, you’ll get it in central midfield.”
