Kaizer Chiefs have been lauded for their development of youngsters, this after yet another young star has been promoted by the club.
Chiefs confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) the promotion of young Njabulo Blom – a 19-year-old South African junior international – from the club’s development on a four-year contract.
Since his arrival at Chiefs in December as the club’s head coach, Ernst Middendorp has shown huge enthusiasm for working with young players, with 21-year-old Happy Mashiane being another up and coming defender already making a name at the Soweto giants, after being promoted under the German mentor this year.
Speaking to the Siya crew, former Chiefs defender Rudolph Seale lauded Amakhosi and Middendorp for giving youngsters from development a chance in the first team.
“I think that’s a very, very good step that Middendorp is taking and I hope that everybody (all the clubs) will follow suit. I’m saying this even though I know that youngsters from development won’t have an immediate impact in the first team, especially at the big three, big four or whatever,” said Seale.
“Coaches don’t have the pleasure of doing as they wish because of pressure from the supporters. In some instances, coaches will decide to give youngsters time to settle. They won’t want to lose points just because they want to give youngsters from development chance to play. That’s why sometimes teams buy players from outside the country from countries like Zimbabwe and so on. But it’s important to develop for the future. At the same time, results are important. After all, coaches are paid for the results and not for performance,” added the legend.
