Eric Tinkler is hoping to spring a surprise on Kaizer Chiefs, with his Maritzburg United hoping to boost their survival chances and dent Amakhosi title aspirations.
The two sides will lock horns tomorrow as the Glamour Boys look to keep their slim chances of winning the Absa Premiership alive, while the Team of Choice are battling for their own lives down at the bottom of the table.
Tinkler, who has sparked a turnaround in fortunes since his arrival in Pietermaritzburg, is aware that his counterpart, Ernst Middendorp, knows his side well, but insists that they’re just as well prepared.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Tinkler revealed his hopes for the encounter, saying, “Hopefully we will be able to catch Middendorp a little bit by surprise. The same way he knows what I do, we know what he does, because he was the one who started the 3-5-2 here, and that’s what he’s been trying to do at Chiefs. He also loves playing the 4-4-2 diamond, so we have to expect any of those things.”
Meanwhile, Tinkler also explained that the mood is good in camp at the minute despite their dangerous position on the table, and he insists that his players won’t need any motivation going into this weekend’s bumper clash.
The former Orlando Pirates coach said, “Obviously after the win (over AmaZulu), the mood is where it needs to be. Knowing that you’re playing Kaizer Chiefs, the motivation is there…
“It’s a case of going out there and making sure that we play with no fear. Very important. Also, maturity is key at this stage of the league. You’ve got to make the right choices, the right decisions in the right moments. We’re going there for the three points because that is what we are desperately in need of.”
Maritzburg haven’t managed to beat Chiefs since a 1-0 win in 2015, while their encounter earlier this season finished as a 0-0 draw at Harry Gwala Stadium.
