Kaizer Chiefs kept their title hopes alive

Kaizer Chiefs kept their title hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United, however Ernst Middendorp thinks they were lucky to still be in the game at half time.

The Glamour Boys managed to overcome a tough first half against a Maritzburg team fighting for their lives, with Dumisani Zuma going on to score the winning goal in the second stanza after being set up by Leonardo Castro.

Middendorp made changes as he brought on the likes of Willard Katsande and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to successfully turn things around on the way to victory, however he does believe that his former club will win their fight against relegation.

Speaking to SuperSport after the game, the German didn’t mince his words, saying, “I made it very clear in half time that we were lucky to have a 0-0, there were opportunities for Maritzburg United, but I think in the second half things were a bit different for our side.

“We are happy with the result, as I said, Maritzburg United is a team they will definitely stay in the league. I’m 100% convinced of it, but for us it was important to win and we are happy about it.”

Maritzburg are currently four points adrift of safety in the Absa Premiership with seven games left to play, and Eric Tinkler has a big job on his hands if he’s to keep them in the top-flight.
