Pitso Mosimane strongly believes Denis Onyango should have been crowned Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season last night, not eventual recipient Ronwen Williams, who plays for SuperSport United.
The other nominee in the category at the PSL awards last night was Cape Town City’s Peter Leeuwenburgh.
“I don’t want to be controversial, but I think he had a lot of clean sheets and we only lost two games (in the league) when he was playing. And we had the best defence, plus we finished No.1 and my opinion is that he should have won the award,” the Mamelodi Sundowns coach told journalists.
In 17 league matches, Onyango managed eight clean sheets and conceded 10 goals, while Williams was ever-present for SuperSport, playing all 30 games and keeping 12 clean sheets. He conceded 29 goals.
“I talk for my player,” Mosimane continued.
“I don’t know what’s the criteria, I don’t want to be there. Denis is No.1 in Africa, so how can he not be No.1 in South Africa? Excuse me. Thembinkosi Lorch (Footballer of the Season), yes no doubt. But some of these other awards, I feel like it’s social support, welfare. Give this one and then that one because nobody can win them all.”
