For the first time in the history of the Carling Black Label Cup, there is a Kaizer Chiefs player with more votes than goalkeeper and captain Itumeleng Khune – and it’s a surprise choice.
Ahead of the much-anticipated pre-season Soweto Derby between Amakhosi and their bitter rivals Orlando Pirates on July 27 at FNB Stadium, fans have been voting for their starting line-up.
Bernard Parker has emerged as the favourite, eclipsing Khune at the top of the charts in a first for the Carling Black Label Cup.
One of the reasons could be Khune’s lack of action following a shoulder injury that kept him out of the remainder of the 2018/19 season back in January, while Parker took over the armband and produced his best form.
The veteran striker even earned himself a new contract with the Glamour Boys under coach Ernst Middendorp.
It remains to be seen whether Parker will remain the fan-favourite as the fixture approaches next month, with Leonardo Castro third in the order, though actually numbers have not yet been revealed.
