Caf has announced the official 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament, which includes more stars from runners-up Senegal than Afcon winners Algeria but no player from Bafana Bafana.
The African football body announced the Best XI late on Saturday – a day after the Desert Foxes had beaten the Lions of Teranga to lift their second Afcon title.
Aliou Cisse’s men, meanwhile, lost their second final and extended their wait for the biggest trophy in African football.
However, runners-up Senegal ended up with more players in the Team of the Tournament than winners Algeria, namely Lamine Gassama, Kalidou Koulibaly, Youssouf Sabaly, Idrissa Gueye and Sadio Mane.
In addition to the five Senegal stars four Algerians made the selection. Rais M’Bolhi, who was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament was chosen in goal, while Adlene Guediora, Riyad Mahrez and Player of the Tournament Ismael Bennacer also made the selection.
Tunisia’s Yassine Meriah and Golden Boot winner Odion Ighalo were the only two players, who did not feature in the final to make the Best XI.
Algeria’s Djamel Belmadi was named Coach of the Tournament.
There was also no player from South Africa after Stuart Baxter’s side were knocked out in the quarter-final by Nigeria following their heroic win over hosts Egypt in the Round of 16.
