Pitso Mosimane was a little cagey when asked whether Khama Billiat would make a dramatic return to Mamelodi Sundowns, but he did admit that very few coaches would resist having a player of that quality.
The Siya crew exclusively revealed last week that Mosimane was involved in high level talks with Kaizer Chiefs to try lure back their star man, who joined Amakhosi a year ago – from Downs – as a free agent.
“I should be very careful on this issue,” Mosimane told journalists.
“I need to respect Chiefs, a big institution. And the league will fine me if they complain, that I am poaching their players. If we want Khama, then what we need to do is speak club to club – you know the story. And they will say whether they are selling or not.”
Some reports have even suggested Billiat is the one who has asked Sundowns to take him back, though they would have to agree a transfer fee with Chiefs given that the player still has two more years to run on his contract.
“Even (Lionel) Messi has got a price, let’s be honest. If anyone comes to me and says they will give me $1-million net, I am gone. We all have a price, everybody has a price, even you the media. Even my players at Sundowns have a price. But I can’t talk about it because he belongs to Chiefs. If I speak, they will report me to PSL because last year John Comitis (Cape Town City chairman) wrote me a big love letter (over allegedly poaching Aubrey Ngoma), and I must learn from that,” said Mosimane.
He continued: “Ask any coach if they would like to have Themba Zwane or Gaston Sirino and the answer is “why not”. But we have to be careful. We are not rookies.”
