Ernst Middendorp says one of Kaizer Chiefs’ new signings was tested in his ‘rightful position’ against Mamelodi Sundowns as the Glamour Boys romped to a Shell Helix Ultra Cup victory.
The Glamour Boys put in a tremendous first half performance against the reigning Absa Premiership champions on Saturday afternoon, taking a 4-0 lead into the half-time break before a resurgent Masandawana pulled two back in the second half. Middendorp says that the weekend, which also included a 2-0 defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic in the Macufe Cup, was good preparation for the Amakhosi, though insisted there was more than just the 4-2 win to be pleased about.
Speaking to Chiefs’ official website after the two games, the German coach said, “I am happy with the tour. It was a good part of our preparations for going to the next matches… “The first one against Sundowns was a good win. I am happy a player like Leonardo Castro came to the party and put up his hand as a force to be reckoned with. Yagan Sasman was also tested on what I thought is his rightful position at centre-back. A few other elements including combinations came to the fore.”
Sasman has played three Absa Premiership games for Chiefs since making the switch from Ajax Cape Town earlier in the year, and will be hoping to get another appearance under his belt this weekend when they head back to his hometown to face Cape Town City in the Telkom Knockout.
