The Citizens decided to cut ties with McCarthy after three seasons following a string of poor results which saw them manage only one win in nine league games.
According to a statement from the club, the former Bafana Bafana striker was sacked following a poor run of performance that saw the club win only two games in their last 18 matches.
McCarthy’s assistant Vasili Manousakis will now serve as caretaker coach until a new coach is appointed.
Comitis, who seemed to have a strong relationship with McCarthy and always backed him in the media, admits it was difficult to make the decision to fire the coach who brought the club’s its first MTN8 trophy.
“This is a difficult time for me when it comes to Benni, I don’t want to elaborate at this point. It was a tough call.”
Pressed on whether he is looking to bring in an overseas coach or a local, Comitis did not rule anybody out.
“No decisions have been made. We have to consider all our options.
