Middendorp and Ertugral , criticised for their ‘straightforward’ approach

The current and former Kaizer Chiefs coaches respectively have been criticised at times, with some in the fraternity of the opinion that they are difficult to deal with.

Ronnie Kanalelo, who served under both mentors at some point in his goalkeeper training career, disapproves of the criticism against the experienced coaches.

“He (Middendorp) makes it easier for you to understand if you were wrong in doing something, or where you need to improve, because he is straightforward. The problem with friendships or in a working environment is that when people are being straightforward with you we take it very personal,” said Kanalelo.

“I’ve worked with Ertugral and in the meeting Ertugral would tell me, ‘I’m not happy with the goalkeepers.’ I would then at a later stage ask him, when it was only me and him, what did he mean when he said he wasn’t happy with the goalkeepers. We would discuss the area of concern that he was not happy about. That’s it! You go back and realign yourself and do what is needed to be done,” the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns keeper adds.

“I’ve also worked with coaches who don’t say anything but in the background you will hear that the coach said A, B and C about you. That way you will never solve problems. I will not have respect for those type of people because I’m a grown up guy and I’m experienced, I can take anything, just throw it and then we move on for the sake of the job. No personal issues or thinking that you will hurt my feelings, to hell with that!” concluded Kanalelo.
