While the arrival of German coach Josef Zinnbauer has been a breath of fresh air for Orlando Pirates, there are a few players who have fallen down the pecking order under his guidance this season.
he likes of Gabadinho Mhango and Luvuyo Memela have been firing on all cylinders since Zinnbauer arrived in December, inspiring Bucs to seven wins and a draw in his 10 games in charge this season.
There have been a few mainstays in Zinnbauer’s side, with the 49-year-old opting to stick with his tried and tested side, seldom making changes to his starting XI.
This has meant that the likes of Xola Mlambo, who is a fan favourite at the Soweto giants, has seen very little game-time. Mlambo has only made seven appearances, his lowest tally since he was snapped up from Bidvest Wits in the 2017/18 season.
Mlambo is not the only player who has found game-time hard to come by. After he was signed from Bloemfontein Celtic, the future looked bright for Nedbank Ke Yona search graduate Bongani Sam, however, his two appearances this season are in stark contrast to last season where he made 20 appearances for Siwelele.
Innocent Maela has been Zinnbauer’s preferred choice at left-back, or as a left centre-back when the coach players a 3-4-3 formation, meaning that more often than not, Sam has had to settle for a place on the bench.
