While there have been suggestions that Kaizer Chiefs should be handed the league title, there are also many figures in the football fraternity who strongly disagree.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen football in South Africa suspended indefinitely, however, after almost six weeks of the lockdown, the Premier Soccer League might finally come to a decision when they meet this Thursday.
As things stand, sporting events and public gatherings are still prohibited during level four of the lockdown, which means that there is still a big possibility that the suspension of football could go on for much longer.
Many people have shared their opinion on whether or not the 2019/20 campaign should be concluded. Some say that the season should be cancelled, following suit with what has been done in France where Paris Saint-German was handed the league title.
However, former Chiefs striker, Mark Williams strongly disagrees that the same should happen in South Africa, due to the fact that Chiefs do not have enough advantage over the other teams in the league.
“Kaizer Chiefs are not Liverpool, for me it is still a three horse race, I think Bidvest Wits can come through the back door and also win it and Mamelodi Sundowns if Chiefs don’t win it. So I don’t think you can just give the league title to them (Chiefs), only if it was one game left and if you worked it out mathematically, if they just need a draw, it is a different ball game,” Williams said.
“Liverpool, they’ve got a 25 point gap, you can give it to them, but to Chiefs you can’t give it to them because Sundowns still have to play Chiefs, Pirates still have to play Sundowns and Bidvest Wits too and that can be a decider,” he added.
