Venue: Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates entered the halftime break of their MTN8 semifinal first-leg tie with Kaizer Chiefs leading by one goal.

Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt largely kept faith with the side that beat Chippa United and made just one change to his starting lineup, with Ramahlwe Mphahlele coming in for the injured Reeve Frosler, while Erick Mathoho returned on the bench.

Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer made significant changes. Thabang Monare, Zakhele Lepasa, Thembinkosi Lorch, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Wayde Jooste and Innocent Maela all returned to the starting lineup as Absa Premiership 2019/2020 top goalscorer Gabadinho Mhango missed out through injury.

On 10 minutes, Chiefs came agonisingly close. Pirates defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza mistimed his interception allowing Khama Billiat in behind, who twisted and turned perhaps one too many times before toe-poking an effort that shaved the top of the crossbar.

Billiat was played through in behind once again soon after and held up the ball before timing his pass perfectly for Leonardo Castro, who had a simple opportunity from straight in front but he badly shanked the glorious chance well wide of the right-hand upright.

Pirates were bossing the possession and territory stakes and punished Chiefs for not taking their chances soon after when Dzvukamaja whipped in a lovely ball with his left foot for Lepasa to head home past a helpless Akpeyi in to the back of the net for the first goal of his campaign and the match in the 26th minute.

Chiefs should have been level on 44 minutes when Lebogang Manyama’s brilliant free-kick from the right-hand side was headed over the bar by defender Siyabonga Ngezana.
